The MERX instrument consists of three interconnected modules: the autosampler, trap/desorption unit, and the detector. The instrument is designed to operate on a specific mixture of reagents that are prepared in septa sealed 42 ml glass vials. The autosampler holds three removable 24 vial sample racks, each consisting of 3 rows of 8 vials.
Purge and trap: An appropriate amount of water is added to a clean purge and trap vial, followed by an aliquot of methanol extract. Internal standards are added, either manually or automatically by the purge and trap system. Sample vials are sealed with a cap and Teflon-lined septum, and are loaded onto the autosampler.
